Feed and strike
A scrum and restarts drill for U10 and up, with where the cones go, how it runs and what to say when it is not working.

Setting it up
One three-player front row, set and holding. A scrum half with two balls.
How it runs
The feed goes in straight along the tunnel and the hooker strikes it back with the near foot. Twelve goes then change hookers. Every child in the squad has a go at hooking, because on a Sunday whoever turns up is who you have got.
What to watch for
- Feed it straight and along the ground, not up in the air
- Hooker keeps their bind while they strike
- Strike with the near foot and hook it back, do not kick at it
Make it easier
- Roll it in by hand with nobody bound
- Coach places the ball in the tunnel
Make it harder
- Add the second row channelling it back
- Feed at match pace
What it looks like when it is going wrong
What you can see from the touchline, then the one thing to say about it.
- The feed going in on a curve towards their own hooker
- Roll it straight down the middle. Aim at the far side
- The hooker letting go of their bind to reach for the ball
- Keep hold of your prop. Only the foot moves
Safety. Nobody pushes. Front row stays bound and still. Stand everybody up between goes so nobody is holding a position for long.
The RFU's Headcase is where to go for what to do after a bang on the head. It is theirs rather than ours.

The grades that can do it
What U10 rugby allows is the rule this sits under. Regulation 15 is reissued every summer, so the RFU's own rules of play are the ones to read for this season rather than a copy on somebody else's website. Ours included. Read against the RFU's 2026/27 appendices in August 2026.
