Two hand relay
A handling and passing drill for U7 and up, with where the cones go, how it runs and what to say when it is not working.
Free to read with no account. It works at a pitch with no signal too.

Setting it up
Teams of four in lines. A turning cone ten metres out from each line.
How it runs
Run to the cone, round it, back, hand the ball over with two hands. Not a throw, a hand over. First team with everyone sat down wins. Three races. The only thing you are coaching is that the ball is carried in two hands and given properly, because at this age a one handed carry is where every dropped ball starts.
What to watch for
- Two hands on the ball. Both of them, all the way
- Hand it over, do not throw it
- Look at the person you are giving it to
Make it easier
- Shorter run
- Walk it once through first
Make it harder
- Carry two balls
- Round the cone the other way so they turn both directions
What it looks like when it is going wrong
What you can see from the touchline, then the one thing to say about it.
- One hand on the ball the moment they start running
- Two hands. If it drops, walk the next one
- The ball thrown at the next child rather than handed over
- Put it in their hands. You should be able to feel them take it

The grades that can do it
What U7 rugby allows is the rule this sits under. Regulation 15 is reissued every summer, so the RFU's own rules of play are the ones to read for this season rather than a copy on somebody else's website. Ours included. Read against the RFU's 2026/27 appendices in August 2026.
