Spin pass build
A handling and passing drill for U11 and up, with where the cones go, how it runs and what to say when it is not working.

Pairs, kneeling, five metres apart.
How it runs
From the knees, spin passes to each other. Twenty each side. Knees take the legs out of it so all they can do is use their hands. Then stand up, go to eight metres and do twenty more. Then jog and pass. A long pass is a wrist and a follow through, not a big heave. Kneeling proves that faster than any explanation.
What to watch for
- Bottom hand pushes, top hand guides the spin
- Follow through towards the target with both hands
- Ball comes off the fingers, not the palm
Make it easier
- Stay kneeling and closer
- No spin at all, just a firm push pass
Make it harder
- Stretch to twelve metres
- Pass off both hands equally
What it looks like when it is going wrong
What you can see from the touchline, then the one thing to say about it.
- Both hands shoving the ball, so it wobbles and goes nowhere
- Bottom hand does the work. Top hand only turns it
- The pass stopping at the chest with no follow through
- Finish with both hands pointing at them

The grades that can do it
What U11 rugby allows is the rule this sits under. Regulation 15 is reissued every summer, so the RFU's own rules of play are the ones to read for this season rather than a copy on somebody else's website. Ours included. Read against the RFU's 2026/27 appendices in August 2026.
