Scrum and away
A scrum and restarts drill for U10 and up, with where the cones go, how it runs and what to say when it is not working.
Free to read with no account. It works at a pitch with no signal too.
- Age grades
- U10, U11, U12
- Time
- 10 minutes
- Players
- 8 to 16
- Space
- 25 x 20 m
- Kit
- 6 cones, 1 ball
- Pitch
- Wants a forgiving surface
Setting it up
A three-player scrum with a back line behind it and two defenders out wide.
How it runs
Set the scrum, feed, strike, then play. The point is the six seconds after the ball comes out, because a scrum won and then wasted is no better than a scrum lost. Eight goes then rotate everybody through the front row.
What to watch for
- Backs are set and looking before the feed goes in
- Nine gets to the ball as it comes out, not after it has stopped
- First receiver runs straight. The space is behind the scrum
Make it easier
- No defenders at all
- Coach hands the ball to nine
Make it harder
- Three defenders
- Scrum on the other side of the pitch
What it looks like when it is going wrong
What you can see from the touchline, then the one thing to say about it.
- The backs standing flat footed watching the scrum
- Turn round. Be moving before the ball is out
- Nine arriving after the ball has stopped rolling
- Be there as it comes out. Two steps early, not two late
Safety. Uncontested, no push. Stand up between goes. Age grade rules for anything that happens after the ball comes out.
The RFU's Headcase is where to go for what to do after a bang on the head. It is theirs rather than ours.

The grades that can do it
What U10 rugby allows is the rule this sits under. Regulation 15 is reissued every summer, so the RFU's own rules of play are the ones to read for this season rather than a copy on somebody else's website. Ours included. Read against the RFU's 2026/27 appendices in August 2026.
