Pass down the line
A handling and passing drill for U7 and up, with where the cones go, how it runs and what to say when it is not working.
Free to read with no account. It works at a pitch with no signal too.

Setting it up
Threes side by side, three metres apart, at one end of a channel.
How it runs
Walk forward together passing along the line. Reach the far cones, turn round, come back the other way. Six lengths. Then jog it. Keep the line flat, because the second one child runs ahead the pass has to go forward and it all falls apart. Point that out once, then let them feel it.
What to watch for
- Stay level with each other. Nobody races ahead
- Pass across your body with your fingers, not a swing of the arms
- Hands up and out before it comes to you
Make it easier
- Walk it
- Two metres apart instead of three
Make it harder
- Jog it
- Fours instead of threes so the ball travels further
What it looks like when it is going wrong
What you can see from the touchline, then the one thing to say about it.
- One child a metre ahead of the rest, so the pass has to go forward
- Stop. Get level, then walk again
- Hands hanging by their sides until the ball arrives
- Hands up and out. Give them a target to hit

The grades that can do it
What U7 rugby allows is the rule this sits under. Regulation 15 is reissued every summer, so the RFU's own rules of play are the ones to read for this season rather than a copy on somebody else's website. Ours included. Read against the RFU's 2026/27 appendices in August 2026.
