Name and pass

Setting it up
Everyone in a loose circle, one ball.
How it runs
Shout a name then pass to them. They shout a different name then pass on. Nobody gets it twice until everyone has had it once. Two minutes of that then start jogging on the spot while you do it. Worth five minutes in September when half of them do not know each other yet.
What to watch for
- Say the name before the ball leaves your hands
- Look at the person you are passing to
- Two hands on the ball every time
Make it easier
- Underarm pass only
- Smaller circle
Make it harder
- Add a second ball going the other way
- Jog around the circle while passing
What it looks like when it is going wrong
What you can see from the touchline, then the one thing to say about it.
- Name said as the ball is already in the air
- Say it first, then pass. In that order

The grades that can do it
What U7 rugby allows is the rule this sits under. Regulation 15 is reissued every summer, so the RFU's own rules of play are the ones to read for this season rather than a copy on somebody else's website. Ours included. Read against the RFU's 2026/27 appendices in August 2026.
