Jog and place
A tackle warm-up for U9 and up, with where the cones go, how it runs and what to say when it is not working.
Free to read with no account. It works at a pitch with no signal too.

Setting it up
Waves of four, ball each, jogging up a short channel.
How it runs
Jog five metres, go down on your side, place the ball long behind you, get up and jog back. Six each. Slow and tidy, no rush. Placement is the skill that decides whether the next ruck is easy or horrible and it costs nothing to warm it up.
What to watch for
- Land on your side so your arms are free
- Arms straight and long, ball back towards your own posts
- Straight up off the floor. Do not lie there
Make it easier
- Walk it
- Place from kneeling
Make it harder
- A support player arrives to pick up and carry on
What it looks like when it is going wrong
What you can see from the touchline, then the one thing to say about it.
- Landing chest first with the arms underneath
- On your side. Arms need to be free
- Lying there admiring the placement
- Straight up. Do not stay down
Safety. Ground contact only. No player touches another player in this one.
The RFU's Headcase is where to go for what to do after a bang on the head. It is theirs rather than ours.

The grades that can do it
What U9 rugby allows is the rule this sits under. Regulation 15 is reissued every summer, so the RFU's own rules of play are the ones to read for this season rather than a copy on somebody else's website. Ours included. Read against the RFU's 2026/27 appendices in August 2026.
